The City Factory was a workshop we created for Hidden Door Arts Festival 2017, in the Leith Theatre.
The workshop experience allowed the participant to move through a conveyor belt of roles, from planner, to landlord, to community organisation, to resident. In each role the participant was allocated a bay and given a set of cutout images to paste onto a roll of paper, filling out a pre-drawn building outline. As they moved through the roles these cutouts differed – from commercial units, cinemas, fenestration and doors, down to landscaping and individual use of the space.
These layers gradually accumulated, building up a collaborative fantastical streetscape that brought to life the powers at play that shape our cities, but also the individual will of the citizens that use it.
What would a street designed by its residents look like? Take a look above!
